Architecture & History

From 1984 to 2017 the Buiksloterdraaibrug bridge house accommodated the city’s bridge keepers. In 2017 the bridge house started a new chapter as one of 28 suites for SWEETS hotel.

Architect 1984: Ingenieursbureau Amsterdam (IBA)
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Structuralism
Location: Buiksloterdijk
Waterway: North Holland Canal
Bridge Type: Swing Bridge

The bridge house at Buiksloterdraaibrug (bridge) over the North Holland Canal was designed by Rijkswaterstaat, similar to the Duivendrechtsebrug bridge house. In contrast, the Buiksloterdraaibrug bridge house has a more rustic character because of its location and the brick elevations. The large windows on all sides provided the bridge keeper with a clear view over the canal. An external concrete staircase along the south elevation previously gave access to the bridge’s basement.
