Architect 1673: Joannes Hudde
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Dutch Classicism
Location: Amstel
Waterway: Amstel
Bridge Type: Lock
The Amstelschutsluis bridge house is situated in the Amstel River, opposite the Carré Theatre. This lock complex dates from 1673 and consists of various locks, a former lockmaster’s office and three service buildings, all designed by the mathematician and mayor Joannes Hudde. The locks made it possible to collect tolls from vessels entering the city, but above all, they refreshed the highly polluted Amstel and the burgwallen canals.
The former lockmaster’s office stands on the central lock island. The building has a square floor plan, brick elevations with natural stone cornerstones, sliding windows with white painted wooden window frames and a zinc pavilion roof. The entrance is situated in a wooden extension.
On each of the other two lock islands there is a small, square, former control building, clad with natural stone and capped with a small zinc pavilion roof. On the west bank there is a rectangular wooden building, which also has a zinc pavilion roof. This building probably served as a waiting room or as storage space.
The lock complex with service buildings, operating equipment, lock islands, bays and doors was listed national monument in 2001 because of its importance for the local history.
