Architecture & History

From 1990 to 2017 the Wiegbrug bridge house accommodated the city’s bridge keepers. In 2017 the bridge house started a new chapter as one of 28 suites for SWEETS hotel.

Architect 1990: Mathieu Ponsen
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Contemporary
Artwork: Leonie Mijnlieff
Location: De Clerqstraat
Waterway: Kostverlorenvaart
Bridge Type: Bascule Bridge

Various bridge houses have stood along the Wiegbrug (bridge), from a simple wooden building to a diamondshaped Amsterdam School building by architect Pieter Lodewijk Kramer. The current building, the Wiegbrug bridge house, dates from 1990 and was designed by Mathieu Ponsen. The design is purely functional and was not intended to beautify the cityscape. It is a functional box that met modern bridge operating requirements. The steel bridge house sits on a concrete column with its base in the water. A metal swimmer – an artwork designed in 2004 by Leonie Mijnlieff – projects from the column. An interesting detail is that the basement for the bridge’s counterweight was originally located on the other side of the bridge. This basement fell vacant when the weight was relocated. Currently there are plans to transform this vacant space into a bridge museum.
