Conveniently located, it’s a short walk to the station and right in the heart of the city center, making it an ideal starting point to discover Amsterdam. The ambiance ensures a peaceful stay, allowing you to fully unwind.
From 2004 to 2017 the Oosterdoksdraaibrug bridge house accommodated the city’s bridge keepers. In 2017 the bridge house started a new chapter as one of 28 suites for SWEETS hotel.
Architect 2004: Kerste-Meijer
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Contemporary
Location: Oosterdok
Bridge Type: Swing bridge
Characteristics: Steel structure, titanium exterior cladding glass
The huge, eye-catching Oosterdoks house, designed by the architectural firm kerstemeijer, stands between the distinctive swing bridge Oosterdoksdraaibrug and the langedoksbrug. Its central position in the water gives the bridgemaster a clear view across the busy waters of Oosterdok. The rectangular control building is set on a glass base, hence it appears to hover above the water. The elevations are clad with titanium sheets. The building’s long sides are provided with narrow horizontal strip windows with orange-brown window frames. Both end elevations are entirely of glass, affording a maximum view. The amply projecting roof shields the bridge operator from direct sunlight. The steps in the glass base also have a structural function. The entire structure stands on a massive basement containing the rest of the plan, including a kitchen, toilets and showers.
