Kortjewantsbrug

Feel like the city’s guard from this bridge tower with incredible 360-degree view. From this unique hotel room in Amsterdam Center, perched high above the water, you can see how centuries of development made this city into the miraculous place it is now. The Schreierstoren (built in 1487) reminds us of the old defensive wall that used to stand here, the National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum) with its VOC ship ‘De Amsterdam’ takes us back to the Dutch Golden Age, and the modern science museum NEMO shows us the history of knowledge. No wonder that architecture centre ARCAM is situated right next to the bridge house: this place is a goldmine for architectural history!

Amsterdam Central Station is nearby your hotel suite: walk (15 minutes), cycle (8 minutes), take the bus (5 minutes) or go tourist-style and let the ‘Hop On Hop Off’ canal cruisers drop you off right next to your front door. The central location of bridge house Kortjewantsbrug is the ideal starting point for any hot spots and must-sees in Amsterdam Center and beyond.

Bookings for bridge house Kortjewantsbrug include a SWEET little extra: 50% discount on tickets for the Maritime Museum!

architecture & history

From 1967 to 2017, bridge house ‘Kortjewantsbrug’ accommodated the city’s many bridge keepers. In 2017, the bridge house started a new chapter as one of SWEETS hotel’s 28 independent hotel rooms.

Architect 1967: Dic Slebos
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: New Objectivity
Location: Prins Hendrikkade
Waterway: Nieuwevaart
Bridge Type: Bascule bridge

The cylinder-shaped Kortjewantsbrug bridge house on Prins Hendrikkade (street) functioned not only as a bridge control building, it was also one of Amsterdam’s four harbour offices. Ships heading for the Amstel (river) first had to report here.

The building was designed in 1967 by Dic Slebos and stands on a wide circular column on the north side of the Kortjewantsbrug (bridge). The two-storey building is accessed via a spiral staircase in the column. The first floor contained a cloakroom, kitchen and toilet, while the second floor housed the staff offices. The building consists of a steel structure with a wooden roof. The exterior cladding, windows and eaves are of anodized aluminium.
