Architecture & History

From 1912 to 2017 the Nieuwe Amstelbrug bridge house accommodated the city’s bridge keepers. In 2017 the bridge house started a new chapter as one of 28 suites for SWEETS hotel.

Architect 1912: Johan Melchior van der Mey
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Early Amsterdam School
Location: Ceintuurbaan
Waterway: Amstel
Bridge Type: Bascule Bridge

The Nieuwe Amstelbrug (bridge) was designed in 1903 by Hendrik Leguyt with Hendrik Petrus Berlage acting as aesthetic advisor. The bridge house was designed 9 years later by Johan Melchior van der Mey. Until its completion, the bridge keeper operated the bridge from a basement near one of the bridge piers. The Nieuwe Amstelbrug bridge house is a small, rather ‘closed’ structure. It is notable in particular for its rich and skillful brickwork, making it an excellent example of the Amsterdam School. Because the Nieuwe Amstelbrug was in a very poor state of repair, Dirk Sterenburg designed a new bridge and bridge house in 1973. Following protests, however, this plan was withdrawn and the bridge was later restored in 1985. Although the bridge is named the ‘Nieuwe’ (new) Amstelbrug, there was never an old Amstelbrug. In 1903 it was simply the newest bridge over the Amstel (river).
